Two weeks in Nova Scotia

Two days ago I returned from 2 weeks back in Nova Scotia, Canada. It was a great visit home with family, and it was really hard to leave.

Sailing from Mahone Bay to Hubbards. Click to embiggen

Some of the fun stuff we did:

  • Counting 14 hummingbirds at once outside my parents’ house.
  • Sea kayaking at Advocate.
  • Making maple butter with my dad and brothers.
  • Two days’ sailing, from Hubbards to Chester and Mahone Bay with my inlaws.
  • Taking nieces and nephews on Halifax’s Harbour Hopper.
  • Meal at The Bicycle Thief.
  • Visiting Lunenburg.

Easter in QLD

This was an extra-long Easter weekend in Australia (it coincided with Anzac Day) so we went up to Brisbane and hung out with M&B.

It was great fun: we went to Noosa and Tweed Heads (to also see V), played with their dog Ziggy, squeezed in at the end the 21st century art exhibit at the GoMA, saw Thor, had an epic Sunday session, had great seafood, and laughed a bunch.

You can see a few pics here.

The Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands

It’s Easter, and we’re out of the city. We’re hiking in the Blue Mountains and visiting friends in the Southern Highlands and not even thinking about work and real life until we get back Monday night.

Weekend away

Ahh, long weekend. On Friday we drove to an area called The Hawkesbury. It’s the inland bits of the large river just to the north of Sydney, and is an area of hills and waterways that’s very rural. We stayed at a great retreat for a couple of days, did some bush hiking and not much else. We saw some local fauna, including our first wild wombat (though he was across a field, the pics are fuzzy). It was a great spot to unwind, very remote and removed and peaceful.

After a couple of days there we drove through the Hunter Valley to stop at a vineyard, and then east to The Entrance, a seaside resort area. That was a bit more touristy than we liked, but on the drive back towards Sydney the next day we did better: hiking in Bouddi National Park, for instance.

We were both surprised and impressed with how faraway we felt, even though we weren’t long out of Sydney. It was a good break.

There are some pics here.

Long weekend

We’re off to spend four days in The Hawkesbury. I’m looking forward to exploring, relaxing, and a bit of pampering. It’s only a couple of hours from central Sydney, but it all looks quite removed. We’ve got to take ferries to get where we’re going, the Macdonald Valley (named Forgotten Valley by locals).

Eating to the beat in France

As I blogged last week, this past weekend we attended a massive party at Chateau Lartigolle in southern France. It’s the spot where we got married 2 years ago, and we’ve come to know the owners and have returned since. It’s obviously special enough because of that.

But this was a different sort of fun. One of the chateau’s neighbours is Andy Cato, one of the DJs in big-name UK dance act Groove Armada, and he agreed to be the headline star for the party the chateau was throwing.

That party consisted of a big feast in the courtyard on Saturday night followed by an all-night rave in the now-cleaned-out cave underneath the chateau. The owners put out a call to local friends and people (like us) who’ve shown a fondness for the place. Andy Cato also put out an invite to the band’s mailing list. They offered everyone a couple of options: local people could come just for the dance, or for the dinner and dance. Others could come and stay at the chateau (in which case you also got breakfast). They also opened up the field to those who wanted to camp. They put on lunch the next day for those who wanted it.

We flew in Saturday morning and met lots of other folks who were arriving. Only 3 other couples splashed out all the way to stay at the chateau like us. Dinner started about 8pm, and was a massive buffet of chicken tagine and salads and olives: all typical quality for the food at Lartigolle. A cool band (the same guys who played our wedding, actually) set the background mood.

After the meal was all done – at about 11pm – the party moved down to the cave. Some locals guys DJ’d a bit, then Andy Cato came out. It was a really friendly vibe with people dancing, hanging out, chatting outside: a lot of fun. We managed to shake our tail feathers until the wee hours. There were about 200 people, all told.

Unsurprisingly we relaxed on Sunday morning. Lunch was served: some excellent beef stew, again in the courtyard, but only to about a dozen people now, mainly the chateau-stayers. We had a great laugh, the bottles of wine kept flowing, and the whole afternoon eventually just sort of became the evening. We took some photos, played some ping-pong, and had an awesome day.

We stayed one more night, having taken Monday off, and had one more awesome meal at a great nearby restaurant. Honestly, I can’t gush enough about the place (having already gushed on their own web page).

If you want to see some of the photos I took over the course of the weekend I’ve uploaded a Facebook set.

And if you’re interested in hearing more about the music of the weekend, well, that’s on my other blog.

Trip to Canada

I neglected to blog in the past week, mostly because I was incredibly busy catching up at work after having been on holiday for a week and a half. Things are roughly returning to normality now.

The holiday, as I’d briefly written before, was back to Nova Scotia, Canada, where I grew up and where our families still mostly live. Lt Dan and Nellie are the exceptions – they live in Toronto and so we missed them this time. We’ll be seeing them soon, though.

NS was brilliant. We had none of the travel woes and close-calls we had at Christmastime. Family are all super and happy. The weather was great when it needed to be. We got around a lot, but there was enough downtime to really get chilled.

Quick recap, though I’ve mentioned some points before:

If you want to know what NS (or the Blue Lagoon) looks like, check out some pics on Facebook.

Snow day

This has been the most relaxing holiday day yet, and it’s one we weren’t even supposed to have. We’re pretty much snowed in: a proper Canadian winter day. This makes me happy.

Holidays in Canada

After the travel hell to get here it’s been a very nice holiday so far in Nova Scotia. It’s proper cold, and it’s just started snowing a bit. There’s been lots of food and drink, the families are all well, and still time to relax.
