SMH Half Marathon: 2012

The result is in for my half-marathon yesterday. Here it is:

I missed beating my 2nd best time by 10 seconds. Here’s how my half-marathon races have gone:

*I was running to support someone else who was doing their first.

My split times show that my feeling yesterday was right: I pushed myself a bit too hard in the first half and flagged in the second. If I’d just kept my cool a bit more I might have done a lot better. These are the tactical differences between just finishing a race like this versus competing against yourself.

Against others I still did alright. I was at the 30th percentile of all finishers, the 42nd percentile of all males, and the 39th percentile of males in their forties.

More running

I did 20.3 km today at exactly the same pace as I did last weekend (5.5 min/km). It was harder going today; I had to push my body more. It was also tougher environmentally: there were huge ponds of lying water from last week’s rains and my feet were soaked for most of the run. Doing the same time in those conditions feels like a bit of an improvement, then.

I’ve still got to pick up a lot of speed on race day if I’m going to set a new half-marathon personal best. I think I’ll ramp up the sprints in the next few weeks.

I feel great.

Running 20 km

I was scheduled to run 18 km today in prep for my upcoming race. Once out I felt great, though, and actually ran 20 km. It took me an hour and 50 minutes to do that distance. That’s 5.5 minutes/km (or 8.8 minutes/mi). That’s a bit slower than I usually manage during a race, but motivation and adrenaline always make you faster on the day.

I’m pleased about that run. I’ve still got 5 weeks until the half marathon (which is only 21.1 km), so I’ve got lots of time to improve my speed.

Next half marathon

On May 20th I’ll be running the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon. It will be my fifth half. My goal is a personal best, which means doing it quicker than the 1:44:12 net time I achieved in this same race in 2010.

However, I will be two years older than I was at that time, and have not raced a half in a year. Even then I was running to support a first-timer; I haven’t raced a half at capacity for about 20 months. Nevertheless, I’m feeling good about my training right now, so I’m optimistic I’ll do okay.

They’re keeping the new one-lap course they used last year. Organisers are including staggered start times, though. Last year there was a serious bottleneck at the end of the Cahill Expressway, so I think that makes a lot of sense.

My City2Surf 2011 results

The results from last weekend’s City2Surf run are on the web. It turns out I did about the time I expected I had. However, I’d misremembered how well I did last year, so this year was over 5 minutes slower than last.

I’m going to blame that on very little training during my Canada holiday, rather than old age.

In 2010 I did the 14km of the race in a net time of 1:07:51.

This year I did it in 1:13:29. I was in the 83.51% percentile of all finishers, at about 73% for all male finishers and 72% for males in my age group. My per-kilometre pace in the last 4 km (05:03) was faster than that in the first 10km (05:19) not because of any great strategy but because Heartbreak Hill is in the first half of the face and the last few km are downhill.

I still had an immense time on the day, and will do this race again.

SMH Half Marathon

Tomorrow I’ll run the 2011 Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon.

It looks to be a cool, clear day, with the largest ever attendance for this race (more than 10,000). It’s also the 20th anniversary of the race, and there’s a new single-lap course that takes in even more of the great sights of central Sydney.

This will be my fourth half marathon. I’ll be running with someone else who’s doing their first ever half, which I think will make it a new and exciting experience for me.

Next run

On Sunday 15-May I’ll run my fourth half-marathon. This will be my third half in Sydney, my second time doing the SMH Half, and my fifth competitive race overall.

I’ve really come to enjoy these races: the training, the anticipation, the excitement on the day, the camaraderie of the assembled sweaty thousands, the accomplishment.

They’re changing the race route this year, making it a single longer circuit rather than two loops like it was last year. I think that’s great: we’ll get to see more harbour sights this time around.

I still have absolutely no urge to do a full marathon, though.

Faster than I thought

The times from the half-marathon are in, and I did better than I thought I had!

That means my start was much later than I thought, nearly 9 minutes after the gun. I never would have guessed it took that long for the relatively small crowd to get underway; but then again we were funnelled through a pretty narrow start gate.

Anyhow, I ended up in the upper ranges for all relevant groups (males, males in my age group, and everybody). And that’s only 2 minutes off my best time.

Not Since Moses: running through the mud in NS

Although I’m having a good time with my running here in Australia, there’s a race where I’m from back in Canada that looks like it’d be a blast: the Not Since Moses Race, held recently in Five Islands, Nova Scotia.

Five Islands is a tiny community on the Bay of Fundy, one of the places that vies for the title of highest tides in the world. We’re talking 17m of vertical change between high and low tide. That’s a long way for the water to go in and out, and the five islands from which the town takes its name frequently cease to be islands.

Once each summer for the last four years, when the tide goes out far enough, runners race 10km through the mucky, exposed seabed here. And they appear to have a lot of fun doing it.

I’d forgotten about this race until my mom reminded me. I think that’d be an awesome race to try. Not with my good shoes, though.

Running the City2Surf

Today’s City2Surf run was a lot of fun. The crowds were massive. The weather was brilliant. The vibe was friendly. The route was gorgeous.

It was tough going, though. Even though I was in the first group it was still pretty crowded the whole way, and there weren’t many times when I wasn’t dodging people. This was also a much hillier run than the half marathon I did here in Sydney earlier this year: the notorious “Heartbreak Hill” nearly lived up to its name. The least pleasant part of the race was actually the chaos around picking up the bags of our clothing at the end, which took forever.

But it was a great day, and I felt I had a great run. The first group was for runners who expected to do the route in under 75 minutes, and I reckon I did it in about 65. We’ll see the official results on Tuesday.

My next race: the Blackmores Half Marathon in September.
